Julius Klaproth On The Albanians of Asia
Julius Heinrich Klaproth was an orientalist, a linguist and the son of Martin Heinrich Klaproth the owner of the pharmacy The White Swan in Berlin, and a member of the Academy of Sciences, an outstanding scientist. During the Napoleonic wars he published a comprehensive report on his Caucasian travels, which includes a volume on the Caucasian languages, and notes on his trip along the Russian-Chinese border. He also has published many Armenian inscriptions and was a very good connoisseur of the Caspian languages.
In 1826 Juliuth Klaproth's book "Tableaux historiques de l'Asie" was published. In this book he mentions Asiatic Albanians. Klaproth writes that Asiatic Albanians were ruled by tribal chiefs and they were located near Georgia, Russia. He specifically explains that Albania exists in the Caspian Sea. He never mentions Albanians in Europe.
The author writes that he knew about the land of Alanes or Albanians from the Chinese historians. He says that Albanians are Alanes and the same people. He also says that "Pompey made war with Albanians and Massagetes whom we call Alanes", he calls Alanes/Albanians an Indo-Germanic tribe and says that their name comes from ALP and ALB meaning mountain from Teutonic languages. He also says that Procopius knew about Albanians living in Asia.
Klaproth writes that Macedonia was Greek and that Massagetes were Huns.
The author says that Alanes were also called Ossetes from the North Caspian region of Alania.
Klaproth mentions that the area of Daghestan where Albanians come from spoke around twenty six languages, a source taken from Strabo.
