Himara Can Rule Itself and Refuses to be Albanian - (Himara mund të vetëqeveriset dhe refuzon të jetë Shqiptare)

Some intriguing observations regarding Epirus and Himara are made in a French newspaper article that was published in March 1914.

The author writes: "Chimara owes its wonderfully mild climate to being the center of enormous fruit production, which could see even greater prosperity once its cultivation methods, though still primitive, are modernized by the Chimariotes. Despite their methods, they export approximately one hundred thousand tangerines and lemons each year, not to mention figs, almonds, olives, etc. This explains why Chimara refuses to become part of the Albanian principality, for the Chimariotes have always formed a state within a state; they govern themselves as they see fit, determining the tax rate themselves, and obey only to the leader they choose..."

Disa vëzhgime interesante në lidhje me Epirin dhe Himarën janë bërë në një artikull gazete Franceze që u botua në mars të vitit 1914.

Autori shkruan: "Himara ia detyron klimën e saj çuditërisht të butë të qenit qendër e prodhimit të madh të frutave, i cili mund të shohë një prosperitet edhe më të madh pasi metodat e saj të kultivimit, megjithëse ende primitive, të modernizohen nga himariotët. Pavarësisht metodave të tyre, ata eksportojnë afërsisht njëqind mijë mandarina dhe limonë çdo vit, për të mos përmendur fiqtë, bajamet, ullinjtë, etj. Kjo shpjegon pse Himara refuzon të bëhet pjesë e principatës Shqiptare, sepse Himariotët gjithmonë kanë formuar një shtet brenda një shteti; ata qeverisin veten siç e shohin të arsyeshme, duke përcaktuar vetë shkallën e taksave dhe i binden vetëm udhëheqësve që zgjedhin..."

Author: "Two-thirds of the population are Muslim, yet this does not prevent them from using Greek exclusively and possessing an essentially Hellenic mindset. Argyrocastro, moreover, distinguished itself through its enthusiastic support for an independent Epirus"

Autori thote: "Dy të tretat e popullsisë janë Myslimanë, megjithatë kjo nuk i pengon ata të përdorin ekskluzivisht Greqishten dhe të kenë një mendësi thelbësisht Helene. Për më tepër, Gjirokastra u dallua për mbështetjen e saj entuziaste për një Epir të pavarur"

Author: "From Santi-Quaranta, one descends to Preveza—a small town whose entire wealth consists of substantial herds of sheep and goats—and thus concludes the visit to this part of Epirus, which Europe wishes to be Albanian, but which, for its part, intends to remain Greek—or at the very least, independent"

Autori: "Nga Santi-Quaranta, zbresim në Prevezë - një qytet i vogël, e gjithë pasuria e të cilit përbëhet nga kope të konsiderueshme delesh dhe dhish - dhe kështu përmbyllet vizita në këtë pjesë të Epirit, të cilën Evropa dëshiron ta jetë shqiptare, por që ajo nga ana e saj, synon të mbetet Greke - ose të paktën, e pavarur" 

Author: "In reality, Epirus is Greek because the majority of its population belongs to the Greek race, because the language spoken there almost exclusively is Greek, and because even the aspirations of the Muslim and Jewish minorities are distinctly Hellenic. On a recent trip, the Diadochus, that is, tthat is to say, the Prince, heir to the Crown of Greece, was greeted by a Greek speech from a prominent Muslim, Musavir Hairi-Patsanta, who, after lamenting the defeat of his coreligionists, added: “The only nation that has the right to possess our country is the Greek nation. It is returning to an ancient possession, but there is yet another reason. We, the Muslims born in Epirus, knew the Greeks first; we have had relations only with the Greeks. We have studied their language and adopted their customs...”

Autori: "Në realitet, Epiri është Grek sepse shumica e popullsisë së tij i përket racës Greke, sepse gjuha që flitet atje pothuajse ekskluzivisht është Greke, dhe sepse edhe aspiratat e pakicave myslimane dhe hebraike janë qartësisht helene. Në një udhëtim të kohëve të fundit, Diadoku, domethënë Princi, trashëgimtari i Kurorës së Greqisë, u përshëndet nga një fjalim në Greqisht nga një mysliman i shquar, Musavir Hairi-Patsanta, i cili, pasi vajtoi humbjen e bashkëfetarëve të tij, shtoi: "I vetmi komb që ka të drejtë të zotërojë vendin tonë është kombi Grek. Ai po kthehet në një zotërim të lashtë, por ka edhe një arsye tjetër. Ne, Myslimanët e lindur në Epir, i njihnim Grekët e parë; kemi pasur marrëdhënie vetëm me Grekët. Ne kemi studiuar gjuhën e tyre dhe kemi përvetësuar zakonet e tyre".

Author: While in some districts the inhabitants speak either the Albanian or the Koutso-Vlach dialect, Greek remains the mandatory language for religious ceremonies, as well as for social, intellectual, and commercial interactions. It is noteworthy that, even in regions where the Turks converted the Albanians to Islam, they were unable to succeed in making them abandon the use of the Greek language in the city of Argirocastro, where Governor Zographos proclaimed the autonomy of Epirus.

Author: "Historically, moreover, Epirus is Greek; it was so at the time when Pyrrhus enlisted Epirote soldiers into his legions; it was so in the era of Herod, when the cities of Epirus bore Greek names—Apollonia, Omphalion, Phaeace, Byllis, Antigonia, and so forth. Even the very coins minted in the cities of Epirus bear witness to the fact that this region has always been of Hellenic culture and civilization..."
